Water Buffalo : Part of Bukit Sapi Landscape

If you travel along the road to my farm, cow and water buffalo was part of the landscape. Everywhere you can see road signs that remain you to beware of buffalo or beware of cow. I think the signs were serious, one night (a few weeks ago) we nearly accidentally hit a cow during our journey from Kuala Lumpur to Lenggong. And last week I had some experienced with water buffalo. I parked my sedan car under the hill below my farm. When I opened the car's door suddenly I noticed that I was surrounded by a herd of water buffalo. Nothing to worry about because they are tame animals but ready to strike if disturbed. I slowly took a few shots then hops on my husband's motorbike before the herd felt disturbed.

Surviving the Drought

Last weekend I check on the sucker and seedling that we plant before drought season last two months. Amazingly some plant just can’t give up. These are some survivor..

We plant 500 banana sucker before the drought, next weekend I will count how many survive the drought

So happy to see them grow

This one got another sucker

The banana sucker, actually i already give up on them, but somehow many of them survive

This sucker certainly looked healthy

this is at the hill side, I remember how difficult to water them during drought season

I hope this pineapple sucker can survive

Not many of them survive although pineapple well known better adapt to the drought

I think drought doesn't effect tapioca at all, all of them look healthy and happy

Tapioca shoots. One of Malaysian favourite dishes

Have you tried boiled tapioca with salted fish.. the taste is out of the world..

Sweet potatoes

still very young, if the drought continue I think they can make it through

Another young sweet potatoes

Coconut. Out of ten, three  burn, wilted and eventually dead

survive but in poor condition

Another survivor

looked ok

A little shower make the corn seeds start germinate

another corn seedling

Lime. Some can't get through the drought

Time to Deworm, Vitamins and Postpartum Injections

We deworm our goats four times a year. This process consumes a lot of energy especially for us who do not have medical experience. Luckily this time we have a professional helper. Hafiz is my husband’s nephew; he is a paramedic in Hospital Taiping Perak. He is very well versed with the syringe, the CC, the needles etc. . . .. He was doing the injecting job while my husband and Wak Nan hold the goats firmly. My job only reads the prescription from the pamphlets.

Coco and the young doe who just given birth also injected with some vitamins and postpartum medications suggested by Dr. Sue, The Vet. That was my idea because I felt that after give birth those mothers needs some extra energy. We administered the medication without any knowledge by injecting this medication the mother will experience severe pain.  I read the instruction and asked Hafiz to give the young doe 5cc of this medication. She screamed like crazy at one time I thought she is going to die. But thanks god, after 5 minutes she starts walking and eating. After that, we gave Coco only 2 CC, although she can’t move her leg after we injected her, she didn’t scream like the young doe.
I asked Wak Nan to check the condition of the goats this morning and I received reports saying that everything was fine.

The kids. Because of their size and weight, not much problem in injecting process

light and easy

This doe is lactating mother so we gave her some vitamins too

This is also a lactating doe

Young goats, not so tough

Mature goat, quite tough job

The buck. Need some skills...

Our First Chicks

Despite my condition I managed to visit my farm yesterday. My husband and I arrived at the farm around 1.30 in the morning. Wak Nan already in a deep sleep when my husband calls him to open the door for us. Upon arrival we immediately went to bed only woke up by chicken and rooster noise early in the morning. I told my husband to check up on the coop, to see what's going on with the noise; only then Wak Nan told him that it’s just chickens laying eggs. Oh my god, I didn’t remember chickens were so noisy when laying their eggs. Disturbed by the noise, I woke up and went out to see the morning view from the veranda. Then I heard a little sound, cip cip cip.. I saw chicks around their mama... So cute and so little... There were seven small chicks altogether.  Wak Nan told me that they were 3 days old, Oooopss we didn’t do any preparation for these chicks. No drinker, no food dispenser, no brooder.. I quickly took my morning bath and went to the market to do some shopping. But before that I pound some dry corn for the chicks, and then pour some water into the plate for their drinks.  I think that was sufficient before I bought some real chicks accessories.

Cold morning, the mother completely covering her chicks, except for this one, must be very naughty chick

Then four chicks came out

I just scattered pounded dry corn around them

This is how I pound the dry corn

and this is how they turn out

The chicks still under their mother except this one

she is teaching her baby to eat

I pour some water into this plate and then put small rock into it to prevent the chicks from drowning

This is what we got from the market, an astro box, drinker and chicks feed

I bought some material for Wak Nan to build a brooder, but for to night, the chicks have to spent their night in this astro box I got from electrical shop down town.
